THE WORST OF TWO WORLDS

For the Sake of Those Who Have Never Heard
The First of Nine Wives
Mama Lotun is the first of nine wives; she is Pokot. She lives in her home “town”, Orus, a cluster of villages, some made up of only four huts. She was one of the earliest Pokot to put their trust in Christ when some missionaries came calling decades earlier.
Hearing that her aged husband was ill, we went over for a visit. We had to bend very low to get through the entrance of his hut – like a camel passing through the eye of the needle! He lay on one of two “beds”, coughing and spitting on the floor or the wall, whichever was more convenient. He let out some groans as he shifted to some more comfortable position on his “mattress”. All kinds of “stuff” hung on the wall; the putrid smell was inescapable. In the middle of the hut, a fire burned, pouring smoke, tearing our eyes and choking us. Breathing was difficult: this was no place for a claustrophobic or asthmatic. But the Pokot didn’t seem to mind at all: they were used to the fire: they stoked it, cooked their meals on it and used it to heat their hut in the many chilly nights of this wilderness they called home.
This old man was dying, living out his last days in the most squalid condition imaginable. I had seen poverty in other parts of Africa but nothing quite like this. Through the smoke and stench of the dark, dank hut, we shared the love of Jesus with him. Though neither hostile to the gospel nor prohibitive of his first wife’s faith, he’d refused to believe despite years of faithful witness. Tonight was different. With newfound conviction which suddenly energized his weak voice, he excitedly declared his faith in Christ and prayed with us to ask Jesus to save him. We asked the Lord to heal him and gave him The Treasure, the amazing, solar-powered, audio Bible that will continue to bring him the message of God’s love in his own language.
I was in Orus, Kenya as part of an international team put together by World Mission1 ministering to the nomadic Pokot people. On one memorable evening, the Pokot speared a goat to death and roasted the meat for us. They drank the raw blood mixed with fat and ate some part of the goat intestines unwashed and raw. We slept with them in their mud and straw hut – a puny shelter from the howling wind – on a bed of sticks, with cow hide for mattress, and preached the gospel to them. Several of them came to Christ.
All kinds of primitive practices are still current among the Pokot including polygamy and female circumcision; the mother of a freshly circumcised girl even gets to have a feather stuck in her hair! Until recently, the Pokot engaged their neighbors – the Samburus and the Turkanas in fierce, internecine wars, often over cattle. These three tribes are among earth’s 2.7billion unreached peoples who will have the worst in two worlds unless their eternity is secured through the gospel.
Two Worlds
Every individual will experience two worlds. At His trial before Pilate, Jesus told the governor, “My kingdom is not of this world,” implying another world no less real. 2 Paul declared, “If our hope in Christ is good for this life only and no more, then we deserve more pity than anyone else.” 3 So there are two worlds: this and the next; one in time, the other in eternity.
There can be no vacuum in our hearts: we must live for time or eternity, for the ephemeral or the eternal. The believer’s ultimate destiny is to spend eternity in glory with Christ. No wonder the psalmist prayed, “You shall guide me by Your counsel; and afterward You will take me to glory.” 4 There is an afterward: beyond time lies eternity. To not spend eternity with Christ is the ultimate disaster, the mother of all calamities that can befall a human. Better not to have been born than to live on earth and miss heaven. The reason is not far-fetched: those that miss heaven make hell, and both are forever. I admit that the subject of eternal punishment is not popular in a relativistic world bereft of absolute truth. But something serious made it necessary for Christ to die a shameful death on a cruel cross. Eternity was at stake; our destiny hung in the balance, but the love of God devised Calvary to save humanity.
The hell of hell – the real problem of hell is not the fire, torment or lack of food, water or rest but this: FOREVER. If only there was an expiry date to the torments of hell! The only hope of hell’s inhabitants is to pray for God to die, for that is when eternity will end. Since an immortal God is absolutely exempt from death, it implies that the lost will suffer eternal punishment as long as God is alive: “These shall go away into everlasting punishment.” 5 The price Jesus paid on the cross makes this completely unnecessary. Instead of quibbling over the immutable truth of God’s Word, we must do whatever it takes to carry the saving message of Jesus Christ to those who have never heard so that people like the Pokot of Kenya, the Fulani of Nigeria and the Yadav of India will not have the worst in two worlds.
The Poorest of the Poor
It is a known fact that the unreached peoples of the world are also the poorest of the poor. The gospel has positive socio-economic effects, lifting communities that receive it out of poverty and squalor. Until the gospel arrives however, the existing spiritual darkness usually crystallizes into tangible, multidimensional darkness – physical, economic, sociological etc, thereby enslaving the people. Demonic oppression is rife: some are hard to believe – like invisible spirits stoning people in Orus. Or the practice (until recently among the Zarandawas of northern Nigeria) of putting holes on both lips of women and sewing their mouths shut so they don’t eat some of the groundnuts to be planted in the farm! Truly, “the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.” 6
According to the Joshua Project, “The 10/40 Window is home to the majority of the world’s poor. Of the poorest of the poor, more than eight out of ten live in the 10/40 Window. On average, they exist on less than a few hundred dollars per person per year. It has been said that “the poor are the lost, and the lost are the poor”…There is a remarkable overlap between the poorest countries of the world and those that are least evangelized.” 7
The Hope of the Poor
Jesus specifically spoke of the gospel being preached to the poor: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor.” 8 He told those sent by John, “the poor have the gospel preached to them.” 9 Or, as The Message translation says, “The wretched of the earth learn that God is on their side.” 10 Often, not even their governments are on their side, but through the gospel, the poor learn that God is on their side.
Quite literally, the gospel (not the porous promises of poverty alleviation from populist politicians) is the only hope of the poor. This amazing Scripture is proof positive: “Give ear, my dear brothers; are not those who are poor in the things of this world marked out by God to have faith as their wealth, and for their heritage the kingdom which he has said he will give to those who have love for him?” 11 If they don’t get the good things of this life, and never get to experience Sentosa Island (Singapore), Hawaii or Disneyworld, what awesome comfort it will be to “have faith as their wealth” and the kingdom for their heritage – to know the Savior here and afterward spend eternity with Him in glory!
But to live in grinding poverty on earth and still spend eternity apart from God is double tragedy. Obviously, the poor won’t go to heaven simply because they are poor or the rich to hell on account of their wealth. They must both have saving faith in the finished work of Christ to be saved. But for the poor, it’s the only way to avoid the worst of two worlds.
The story of the rich man and Lazarus comes to mind. “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.” 12 The tables were turned when both of them slipped into eternity: the rich man found himself in torments whereas Lazarus was comforted. When the rich man begged for a drop of water to cool his tongue, Abraham told him, “Child, remember that in your lifetime you got the good things and Lazarus the bad things…Here he’s consoled and you’re tormented.” 13 The rich man on earth had become a pauper in eternity.
The Worst in Two Worlds
While it is desirable that everyone gets the best of two worlds i.e. enjoy prosperity on earth and still spend eternity with Christ, the least we must ensure is that those who live in temporal misery on earth must not end up in eternal misery. Instead of letting luxury lull us to lethargy and slumber, those of us whose eternal destinies have been secured by faith in Christ must sacrifice some of our comfort to free up the resources that can make a huge difference for the wretched of the earth. It was tragic that Lazarus had it rough on earth, but it would have been infinitely more tragic if he had had the worst in two worlds.
To live in places like Orus and then spend eternity in the lake of fire is not acceptable. It is not God’s will for people for whose salvation He gave His only Son. We are not called to die on Calvary: the sacrifice of our lives can’t save the camels I saw in Orus or the cows of the Fulani. Only Jesus could pay the full penalty for the sins of the world. But it is not His responsibility to preach what He purchased: that’s our job! We must lay our lives and resources down for this supreme agenda of heaven on earth. We must mobilize every strategy that sanctified minds can fathom, give everything over our real needs, and do all we can so that by all means, we can change the eternal destinies of the unreached peoples of the world. Who knows, in the process of changing their eternal destinies, we could also enrich their lives in time with the good things that accompany salvation. Then they in turn will extend to others the boundless love that lifted them from amongst the wretched of the earth.
May God depend on us.

Myanmar (formerly Burma) has a rich missions heritage. Adoniram Judson and his new wife Ann set sail for India in 1812. Shortly after they arrived the national authorities asked them to return back to America and said they were not welcome. Instead of going home the Judson’s took another ship that was going to Rangoon, Burma. He, his wife and their child would ultimately end up giving their lives to the harsh conditions of life in Burma.

Adoniram himself endured one of the harshest prison terms ever recorded in 1824 that lastest nearly 2 years. Ann would sneak food rations to him to help him survive. His feet were bound to a large bamboo pole, his hands to another, and at night his feet were lifted higher than his head. He endured the challenges of living in Burma for 35 years. What sustained him? A determination that is beyond human reasoning. Listen to his famous words, “I will not leave Burma, until the cross is planted here forever!”

Now in 2012, 83% of the 48 million people living in Myanmar are considered unreached. God is raising up new leaders and strategies to reach these precious people that Jesus died for. People that Adoniram Judson and others have given their lives for the spread of the gospel. Today, a new brand of missions is impacting Myanmar and thousands are coming to Christ. World Mission is seeing a very effective strategy within our national network of compassion projects, church-planting and Treasure listening groups.

Here are a couple of photos from our recent distributions. Keep praying!!

It centered literally over World Mission’s partner (Pastor Alex) community. This has given him a huge opportunity yet also a heavy heart. Please continue to pray for Alex and read the message from him below. We just sent another 100 Treasures which will be distributed to those who are living in temporary shelters.

World Mission is taking a team in March to help rebuild some homes and just encourage our friends and partners. If you are interested, please contact our office. 616-534-5689

Our recent disaster relief funds will pay for housing for a family who lost 2 daughters (read below). It is one of the saddest stories I have heard in my 13 years here at WM. Thanks for helping to make a difference. Please be in prayer for our friends who carry a very heavy load.

Blessings,
Greg

Its so heart wrenching to know that people dear to us suffers through sickness and whatever adverse circumstances after the typhoon Washi which plummeted our city villages. Thank you for your special concern for the flood victims such as one of the poorest family in our congregation, the Dalagan family who lost their two daughters. They are still living now in our sunday school room. The family had lost everything and being rescued ten hours after the flood. They were hit by debris and being tossed by the big waves in the middle of the ocean. They were floating including their boys in the middle of the sea in the darkest night till morning. Shaking and hungry and traumatized when they were rescued. Such a great difficult time to adjust in this kind difficult situation of losing their own children during that ravaging flood is only grace of God can sustain them. Please remember them in your prayers. Your gift will help them build a shanty to live and let them live a normal life again.

Thank you for keep praying for us here as well in the frontlines of the mission fields.Emma and I feel at times so stressed that we had a hard time swallowing our own food thinking of the families in our congregation suffering and in so much depression. I feel helpless and days I am crying to the Lord weeping how could I help my own brethren in the Lord.Oh Lord help us.

People are beginning to lose hope from the government as they are in agonizing asking for help due to the intense suffering. Some are taking suicides in some evacuation centers because aside from they lost their homes they lost their family members and it seems to them that no one cares.Depression is hanging really thick on the air. Please pray with us that God will use us to change the situation as we pray and make practical steps to help our brethren over here . Using the Word of God (Treasures) we want them have their focus on God and deviate from the present circumstances for we know that these present suffering is not worthy to be compared with glory of God that shall be revealed to us.
May God bless you richly.

in Christ’s service,
Alex and Emma

We would now like to report about the progress of the Treasure. We went to Mozambique three weeks ago to assess how the work of the Lord is going on. After visiting most of places where we distributed the Treasures we found that those who have already received them are spiritually growing and also their number is increasing. It’s not those belonging to Step to Jesus Ministries who have been blessed by the gift but there are many even from other denominations. We therefore ask you to send us about 20 additional Treasures to distribute to some groups who failed to receive during our visit in Mozambique. People there are hungry for the Word of God despite many people being illiterate. Here in Malawi, we have visited many places where we distributed the Treasure and the results are very fruitful! Many have received the message but the inadequacy of the Treasure is the only major setback to this ministry. We therefore ask you to send more since they are in great demand. Many leaders from other churches are coming to ask for them, to use in their churches and you should also know that we are the first one to introduce this Ministry here in Malawi and Mozambique.

I was recently reading in Luke 5 and was struck by the amazing transformation taking place between verse 1 and 11. This is the story of Jesus calling Peter to become a ‘true fisherman’ and follow after him. Peter’s initial reaction is an excuse! v.5 – “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and have not caught anything”

If the story ends here it is a tragedy! Here Peter is given a tremendous opportunity to follow in obedience and experience the fruit of that obedience but he INITIALLY misses out. Now, fast-forward to verse 11. Here we see the same Peter leaving everything to follow Jesus! This is an amazing turnaround. Who would have guessed?!! The obvious question is – what led to that change of heart?

The answer is that Peter quickly caught himself after uttering an initial excuse and correctly stated “because you say so, I will….” This is also in verse 5.

So, the moral of this story is that when Christ asks us to do something that might not make sense at the time, we must ultimately respond in obedience to get his best! His best for you and I is to give him everything. Once we do, our lives will be directed in the path that gives him maximum glory and honor. That is why we live on this earth, that is the kind of commitment it will take for us to reach the ends of the earth.

I am in, how about you?

Over the next 2 months hundreds of leaders will be impacted at training sessions we will be participating in. Training sessions in Congo, Nigeria and the Philippines will be taking place with World Mission representatives.

We are passionate about seeing national leaders grow in their ministry skills. As they become more effective, the gospel impact increases. Here are some powerful quotes about leadership training.

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” – John F. Kennedy

“As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others.” – Bill Gates

‘Change is inevitable, growth is optional’ – John C Maxwell

‘To add growth, lead followers – to multiply, lead leaders’ – John C Maxwell

And finally a quote that summarizes WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO.

“We talk of the Second Coming; half the world has never heard of the first.” — Oswald J. Smith

I just read an article that provides a startling projection regarding the unevangelized population. The definition of this population are people who have not yet heard the Gospel in a manner in which they can understand it.

According to professional researchers there are 2,053,206,000 unevangelized people in the world today. Now for their dishearteneing forcast…………
In 2025 they estimate there will be 2,304,664,000 unevangelized people in the world!! An INCREASE of over 250 million people!!!
It is vital for us to properly prioritize our resources so that this forcast does not become a reality. The first step is for us to distinguish between an unevangelized person and a non-Christian.
There is no doubt, Scripture says that every soul is precious to the Lord! “[God] who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim. 2:4)” The difference is that the unevangelized are not people who have heard and rejected the truth……..they are ones who have NEVER heard the truth for the first time!!
An unevangelized population segment–a country, province or people group–is one in which the majority of the population have not heard of Christ, Christianity and the Gospel, and have no access to the knowledge. These people are the center of the bullseye for our ministry. We are consumed by a vision to see the Good News impact their lives! We trust you will join us in this conviction.
Commit to pray for an unreached people group today.
Help us to send a Treasure into an unreached village.
Challenge your local church to get involved in ministry to the unevangelized.
Because HE died for us,

Greg

Kenya has a strong and vibrant church compared to many of its neighbors. Much of the thanks can be given to missionaries who have devoted their lives to taking the gospel to this East African nation. They have invested and trained/equipped thousands of national leaders who are now leading the charge to impact those who have yet to hear the Good News in this land.

Despite all of the mission attention Kenya has received – arguably disproportionate to any other African nation – the northern boundaries remain largely unreached!

We are fixing our eyes upon people groups such as the Boran, Turkana, Pokot, Samburu and Gabbra. All of these precious people are less than 5% Christian with a majority having never heard a clear presentation of the gospel. That is approx 100,000 Christians out of 2 MILLION PEOPLE! Please pray for our 3 teams going out in 2011 to share the gospel, distribute Treasures and minister alongside our network of national and missionary partners on the ground. Here is what one of them recently said about the opportunity to use the Treasure.

“We would like to praise God as World Mission, an organization local to Michigan, has offered to help us get audio Bibles for our people via a unit the call the Treasure. The majority of Gabra are illiterate and those few that can read have a hard time reading fluently. These Treasures would use the Borana version of the Bible as Gabra do not have a translated text but can understand Borana. We are very excited about this as it can increase our outreach potential to the many illiterate villages.”
