About Illiteracy

Developed in the 1440’s, the printing press is one of the greatest inventions in the history of man. It allowed the common man to have access to the Word of God. Its impact was so great, it ushered in the Protestant Reformation!

In the hundreds of years since, the Bible has been printed by the hundreds of millions, in almost every language in the world. As good as the impact of the printed Word has been, however, the major emphasis on printing the Bible does not address the fact that close to 70% of the world’s population prefers a non-literate form of learning! Even the most conservative estimates by the UN state that over 800 million adults worldwide are completely illiterate.

Illiteracy is truly one of the greatest obstacles to the fulfillment of the Great Commission. Today there are 1,100 languages that have New Testament translations. Unfortunately, only 450 have been recorded in an audio format. The Lord has laid a great burden on our hearts to make a difference among the “unreached” peoples of the world. We’ve identified over 6,000 people groups are still considered “unreached.”

These facts are the reasons why we worked so hard to develop The Treasure, which can capture the printed Word of God in audio, making it available for every illiterate population. Our objective is to record and distribute the Word of God in an audio format. These digital messages are place on our field players (The Treasure) and listened to by mostly illiterate groups of 12-20 people. Imagine giving historic access to the power of God’s Word to millions of people around the world! We believe that the impact will resemble that of the printing press some 560 years ago.

What does this say?

“Gama Allah ya yi kamnar duniya har ya bada Dansa, haifaffe shi kadai, domin dukan wanda yana bada gaskiya gareshi kada ya lalache, amma ya sami rai na har abada.”

Now you know how 12 million illiterate Hausa speakers living in northern Nigeria feel! The reality is that these words are the most important that they will ever understand.  Here is the English translation.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life."

— John 3:16
